🤳 News Bits

Beach Replenishment Moves Forward in the South End 🏖️

Now underway, replenishment begins at 45th Street in Ocean City through the entirety of Sea Isle.

  • Work will begin in Ocean City from 56th Street to 45th Street with about 1,000 feet of beach closed at a time.

  • The section from 56th Street to 59th Street will then be done in the opposite direction, going South.

  • Work in Ocean City should be completed by mid-December, weather permitting, before crews move on to Strathmere and Sea Isle.

  • The total project will cost $33.7 million. The federal government picks up 65% of the cost, with the state and towns paying the remaining 35%. Ocean City will wind up paying only about $850,000.

  • The North End had its beach replenishment completed last offseason.

Official(s) News 👨‍💼

Ocean City saw the departure of School Superintendent Matthew Friedman and Police Chief Jay Prettyman this year.

Full-time replacements have been named for one off those positions…

  • Bill Campbell was sworn in as Ocean City’s new police chief earlier this month. The 55-year-old grew up in Lansdowne, PA and has been with the department for more than 30 years serving in various roles. Prettyman recommended him for the role.

    • Campbell said he would continue with efforts to curb rowdy crowds, including curfews and backpack bans.

  • Meanwhile, the city is looking for a new interim school superintendent. The current interim superintendent, Dr. Scott McCartney, will leave the post on January 1. The city says it is confident it will have a replacement by that date as the search continues for a permanent replacement.

  • Outgoing police chief Jay Prettyman was honored as Citizen of the Year.

🎅 Santa, I Know Him!

There will be plenty of chances to see Santa in Ocean City in the coming weeks, according to The Patch:

  • At the Ocean City Community Center’s annual Holiday Festival from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 3

  • Get photos with Santa in a lifeguard boat through Dec. 23 noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the Music Pier

  • Visit Santa downtown through Dec. 23 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays at Mark Soifer Park, 9th Street and Asbury Avenue

😎 Sponsor: Knockaround Sunglasses

Just so you know we fully endorse this one— here is my collection:

Knockaround Sunglasses are perfect for the beach, Boardwalk, and basically everything you do down the Shore. They are ultra affordable (~$30), stylish, well-made, and feature UV400 protection (the highest UV protection) built into every pair. They literally block the sun better than my $200 pair of Ray-Bans, which I now wear only rarely because Knockarounds are just better for almost every daily use.

What’s more, they have cool collaborations with all sorts of brands, including Major League Baseball, US Soccer, and even Shark Week.

You can get up to 40% off this weekend here.

🍦 Ice Cream

A La Mode Ice Cream wins second best ice cream at the National Ice Cream Convention in Las Vegas.

Here’s what they posted on Facebook:

We have some exciting news! We recently attended a National Ice Cream Convention in Las Vegas, and we submitted our Vanilla for judging- we won a second place award!

Last year, we entered and won 3rd place, so we made a few tweaks, and "when you know better, you do better." Excited to keep growing, learning, and bringing the best to our corner of 55th St!

Imagine the conversation when you tell your spouse you’re headed to the National Ice Cream Convention in Las Vegas for the second year in a row.

Tough job, someone has to do it.

Meanwhile, Kessel’s, which is unabashedly a Bryers establishment, just celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Best part? Their prices are 50 years old, too.
