Ocean City's Curfew Appears To Be Working

🎡 Ocean City, NJ's only weekly newsletter

Jay Wright heard the calls from new Varsity Inn owners to hang the Villanova banner at the famed establishment.

What an absolute gentleman. Jay could be mayor of Ocean City if he wanted.

First Kelsey Grammer. Then Cole Hamels. Now, of course, Jay Wright. But I ask again, WHERE YOU AT, BRADLEY COOPER?! WHERE YOU AT?!?!?!?!

Slow news week.

6 ABC Story on Ocean City Curfew 📺

I actually bumped into 6 ABC’s Beccah Hendrickson as she was doing this story the same day we shot our pizza review. I offered up a comment as a purveyor of Ocean City curfew coverage, but was told 6 ABC could “not promote other media outlets.” OK, then.

Anyway, the curfew seems to be working!

The city says by this time in 2022, police had issued nearly 17,000 curbside warnings to juveniles for underage drinking and other minor offenses. So far this year, police have issued about 7,000.

"The ruckus that ensued over Memorial Day weekend and weekends prior to that is, I'm going to tell you, pretty much non-existent at this point," said Jody Levchuk, a city councilman and co-owner of Jilly's.

6 ABC

Only in Ocean City are the city officials also amusement park owners.

You can watch the video of the full report here.

Quasi-related: 6 ABC also did a story on the closing of Henry’s Jewelers which we told you about last week.

🍕 Ocean City Pizza: The Ultimate Blind Taste Test (Coming Soon)

This week, we headed up to the Boards (indeed we walked them) and put Ocean City pizza to the test.

Five leading pizzas - including Manco, Prep’s, Mario’s, Bennie’s, and Express - served up to more than 20 people randomly for the ultimate, unbiased pizza review.

We are terrible on camera, so we brought along friend of the ‘letter, and the only weatherman in South Jersey, NorEaster Nick, to host the event.

We should have the results tallied and video ready by next week, but for now, here’s what I can tell you— in no particular order:

  • Pizza 1 was well received

  • Pizza 2 was said to have “soggy crust”

  • Pizza 3 was lauded for being different and unique

  • Pizza 4 received no first-place votes

  • Pizza 5 was a sleeper that convinced one participant to switch pizza allegiance

So who won? You may be shocked to find out.

🟦 Square Pie Cometh

Speaking of pizza, and speaking of Express - this section is not sponsored, I promise you - but Pizzapreneur Mike Fitzick (aka the Pizza Jew), whom we told you a few weeks ago would be taking over Express Pizza’s kitchen, says his famed square pie will soon be making an appearance:

The "Island Square" pizza prototype is almost ready for the public at @expressocnj. I'm slowly getting the new squares dialed in as my learning curve always leans to "this is banging, but it could be a little better". I've commenced a meeting with my beloved ol' cheese boys and we're slowly getting the band back together. The new pies are cooked in a conveyor belt oven so I just need a little fine tuning in the temperature/time department and then I'll be satisfied. I expected SOME curiosity from the public however the death threats have to stop..

Mike Fitzick

Fitzick is known for his famed square pie at the now-closed Bakeria 1010 in Linwood, and Bar 1010 in Philly.

We’ve been anxiously awaiting this, and it appears the square is… right around the corner.*

*Thanks— I’m here all week.

🍽️ Dish of the Week: Prep’s Chicken Tenders

I debated whether this could serve as a Kid’s Corner, since this may appeal to many youngsters, but it’s stellar for adults too.

I dined in Prep’s while performing market research for our pizza taste test. Wanting to offset the cluster of cows teet I consumed in cheese over the preceding 12 hours, I decided to order chicken tenders with buffalo sauce on the side.

What a call. Scorching hot, crispy, fresh, with a Pete’s Red Hot-style buffalo sauce on the side, these absolutely hit the spot.

If you’re looking for something a bit more nutritious than chocolate-dipped bacon, pizza, or French fries the next time you’re Walking The Boards, then I recommend dipping in to Prep’s and ordering the tenders. Just wait about two minutes after they come out if you value the roof of your mouth.

🍩 Best Jelly Donuts on the Island?

Someone posed this as a question in the Ocean City Facebook group, and there were two answers, split evenly:

  • Dot’s

  • Chester’s (in Somers Point)

We… might need a taste off.

An Off-Market Sale Gives Way To Premium New Construction Opportunity on Central

Love these.

Just the casual estate sale at an old home on a premium lot on the beach side of Central along the Gold Coast.

2539 Central is a 40 x 100 lot. The current house was built in 1932. Its location is near unbeatable:

But when we noticed this estate sale sign last week, we did a little digging and discovered that the property has recently changed hands-- sold to a premium builder.

We're told they plan to build two 4-bedroom, 2- or 3-bathroom condos on the lot.

There is no record of the transaction, and no listing for the new construction yet. But we have a bit of the inside beat on this one. And since you're part of an elite team of readers who keeps up to date on Ocean City with Walking The Boards, we might be able to help if you're interested.
