Improvements Coming ๐
Funding has been approved for nearly $11 million in improvements in Ocean City.
Hereโs what it will go towards:
$6.5 million toward a new police substation at 8th and the Boardwalk
it will be built in 2024
the city also plans to eventually renovate the Public Safety Building, built in 1890, located at 8th and Central
$2.5 million will go toward the renovation of the pool at the Aquatic and Fitness Center
the pool dates back to the 1970s and has a leaky drainage system
work will reportedly be done in the summer of 2024, which seems sub-ideal for vacationers taking part in summer rec programs and swimming classes
$1 million will go toward dredging in the back bays and lagoons to remove muddy sediment
Other improvements: the rest of the money will go toward data computers for the fire department, new radios for beach patrol, and designs for a new terminal building and golf pro shop at the airport
More Potential Flooding ๐
Summer is, clearly, forcefully over.
The Ocean City Office of Emergency Management issued yet another flood warning through 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Here are the full details:
A full moon, strong onshore winds and rain will combine to cause minor flooding over the next four high tide cycles. Street flooding conditions will be similar to what weโve experienced all week.
Water levels are predicted to crest in the hours around high tide on the bay side (Ninth Street Bridge) of Ocean City at 9:03 p.m. Friday. High tide on the bay side of Strathmere near Corsonโs Inlet is at 7:48 p.m. Friday. The NWS predicts a water level of 5.7 feet on the mean low water scale (MLW) for Friday evening. By comparison, the water level reached 5.79 feet in Ocean City on Thursday evening. Visit www.ocnj.us/octides to compare this prediction to other recent and historic tide levels.
Predictions for subsequent tide cycles are as follows:
โข 9:26 a.m. Saturday (9:11 a.m. in Strathmere): 5.7 feet MLW
โข 9:49 p.m. Saturday (9:35 p.m.): 5.6 feet MLW
โข 10:12 a.m. Sunday (9:57 a.m.): 5.8 feet MLW
Residents should be prepared to monitor conditions and move vehicles to safe places in advance of these high tides. The roads closer to the beach including Central and Wesley avenues are typically at higher elevation. Parking also will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora (please read letter from Trinity if you take advantage of this service).
For your safety and the protection of your vehicle and neighboring properties, never attempt to drive through flood waters, and do not drive around barricades.
For Police & Fire Department emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call 609-399-9111.
Fun times.

โ Beach Erosion Photos From Last Week
Remember that beach replenishment from last winter that began eroding in the North End almost before work was completed? Well! You ainโt seen nothing yet. Because Ophelia took full-block pocket sizes of sand with her on her way out.
Hereโs some photos from Facebook that show the result near the lifeguard station at the end of the Boardwalk:

OCNJDaily has some pictures of the beach erosion and flooding throughout the city. WPG Talk Radio has more.
Meanwhile, in the Gardens area, where beach replenishment held up a bit better last year, there wasnโt as much drastic erosion:

Thankfully, mounds of sand that had been piled up in anticipation of subsequent erosion can be deployed on the beaches where available.
