🍬 Douglass Candies Is Coming To Ocean City

Just in case we were getting too many smoothie bars, the popular Wildwood and Stone Harbor candy and fudge shop is coming to Ocean City this spring.

I spoke with fourth-generation owner Jason Dugan, an Ocean City High School alum, who told me he is shooting for a May opening date. The store will be on the Boardwalk between 11th Street and 12th Street.

“We are thrilled to be coming to Ocean City,” Dugan said. “It is such an amazing community and holds a special place in our heart from our high school days here. My brother and I have always wanted to bring our family business here and we couldn’t be more excited for our grand opening in the spring!”

Per Dugan, Douglass is known for its signature plaid box and trademark scotty dog. The plaid represents their Scottish/Irish heritage, while the scotty dog was used because their founder, Charles Douglass, adored his scotty dogs. Easy enough.

I’m sure the owners of Shriver’s, George’s, Fralinger’s, Steel’s and Jilly’s are thrilled. #candywars

🚌 Details on School Bus Accident

A school bus carrying 18 people collided with another vehicle at 18th and Asbury on Wednesday, injuring two students and the driver of the other car.

According to the police report, the driver of the car was traveling northbound on Asbury and ran a red light, crashing into the driver’s side front of the school bus.

The two students were treated on the scene for neck and back pain, and then they were released to school officials.

The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries to the right side of his face, which were reported to be non-life-threatening.

🏛️ Phil Murphy Rejects Fines for Underage Drinking

We’re a bit behind on this one, but worth calling out either way.

In January, Governor Phil Murphy vetoed a bill that would have imposed a $50 fine for underage drinking, citing a potentially disproportionate impact on minority and lower income offenders.

He did, however, sign an amended version of the bill later on which shields officers from criminal charges for questioning juveniles about underage alcohol or marijuana use, so long as their questioning isn’t “with the purpose to intimidate or discriminate against the underage person or group of persons because of a protected characteristic.”

Police are also now allowed to confiscate alcohol and notify parents.

Last year, Ocean City of course passed ordinances related to rowdy teens, underage drinking, and backpacks.

🦭 Seal Rescued Slithering Down Ocean City Streets

Sometimes there’s a story that warms your whiskers.

On Wednesday night, the Marine Mammal Standing Center (is there a more universally beloved local institution?) rescued a grey seal pup that had wandered out of the bay, onto West Ave. between 42nd and 43rd Streets, and towards the ocean.

He was rescued just as he approached the beach ramp on 42nd Street and taken to the MMSC where he was given a feeding tube and electrolytes. He is now resting comfortably in Pen A. Witnesses said he had a close call with a car.

Seals are born on islands and then they wander until they hit water. So this little guy’s instincts were spot on.

And yes, there’s video— it’s the cutest flippin’ thing you’ll see all day:

This is the second seal this season that we have rescued from a roadway, and a good reminder to be careful driving in our shore communities, especially during coastal flood advisories as you never know what you may come across. Many people have asked about this unusual behavior. We have had MANY cases over the past 46 years of seals, especially Grey seals, taking a wrong turn and wandering up beach access paths to backyards, parking lots, and roadways. Typically, we see at least one case of a wayward pup stranding in an unusual location every seal season. These pups are born on islands, so when they get lost, their instinct is to keep wandering until they find a body of water. Please have our 24-hour stranding hotline ready, because you might need it when you least expect it! (609) 266-0538.

🏠 Real Estate Update

Our January market report is now available in our Shore Cribs newsletter. Here are the highlights:

  • Median Sale Price: $1.22M, up 24% from last January

  • Single-Family Median Sale Price: $1.42M, down 10% YoY

  • Condo Median Sale Price: $1.02M, up 63% YoY

  • New Listings: 71, down 41% YoY

  • Sales: 47, up 12% YoY

The condo sale price jump pushed things to an all-time high in Ocean City.

Median sale price is less susceptible to swings than average sale price, but one possible reason for such a drastic increase in median condo price in January may be because of related transactions on three $2 million+ condos, which all closed in the month. One of these was previously featured in this newsletter by Berger agent Kevin Laskowski.

The number is the number, but I wouldn’t expect this same level of outrageous price growth every month this year.

That said, inventory and volume is still comically low, including for new construction. I mean…
